I can’t believe I even have to say this, but Princess Zelda is a main character in The Legend Of Zelda game series. If you aren’t familiar with who she is or what this game is all about. You need to fire up the ol’ Amazon Prime machine and order yourself a whole bucket worth of those games! Zelda is usually the typical damsel in distress, in the games you control the main character Link.
Like most great stories, there is always an excellent baddie. In this game series it’s Ganon that Link has to defeat to come to Princess Zelda’s rescue.
Where did the name Zelda come from?
For the rest of us normal folk that know all about these life changing games, if you were curious about how Princess Zelda got her name, let’s dig into it a bit.
Zelda was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and introduced to the game series in 1986. He has stated that Zelda was named after Zelda Fitzgerald. She was the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald who was a famous writer. Often writing about Jazz.
He once said of his wife Zelda that she was “the first American Flapper”. This term not known by many in today’s age, but this was someone who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and openly disagreed with what was considered appropriate behavior.
“Zelda Fitzgerald was a famous and beautiful woman from all accounts, and I liked the sound of her name. So I took the liberty of using her name for the very first Zelda title.” Shigeru Miyamoto (Zelda Co-Creator)
Robin Williams named his daughter after Zelda
Robin Williams loved playing the Zelda game series so much that he named his daughter after Princess Zelda. When his wife was pregnant, he brought home a large TV and the Nintendo system along with a game called “The Legend Of Zelda”. Robin and his wife loved the name so much that they used it for their new baby girl.
Robin and his daughter Zelda were both featured in a commercial in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS. The cool thing is how much Zelda Williams actually looks like the video game version of Princess Zelda. Here, take a look for yourself…
